Created by Lauren Kravitz and Shantel Prado, Water Work is an immersive dance duet that draws inspiration from American cultures surrounding water. From pool decks to beach shores, the performance nods to communal rituals of leisure, sport, and gathering with poetic, dream-like interpretation.
The slow-building 40-minute performance pulsates with oceanic sounds created through the live mixing of synthesizers; swishes, drips, and beats that gather rhythm as the dancers ebb between fluid grace and sharp athletic form.
As the set designer for Water Work, I consulted with the choreographers about their vision, and we collectively built a mood board of Olympic pools, stadiums, and beach attire. The fabric used for the construction of the panels consists of elastic PVC, taffeta, and quilting cotton; a mix of textures and surfaces that absorb and reflect light. The panels are interchangeable and layered, designed to mimic the rectangular shape of swimming pools and the shifting, glistening form of water.
